The Difficult Truth That Sets Us Free
“Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” (John 16:5-7)
Have you ever felt that Jesus is “far away”? That silence in prayer, that absence of a visible sign? Today’s Gospel turns our perspective upside down: that very “absence” is the condition for an even greater presence.
🕊️ A Necessary Departure
Jesus knew that the disciples loved His physical company. But He also knew that as long as He remained visibly among them, the Holy Spirit – the Comforter, the Advocate – could not begin His universal work. Why? Because the Spirit’s mission is not to replace Jesus, but to internalize His presence.
Think of it this way: while Jesus was limited to one place at a time, the Spirit would soon be poured out upon all flesh (Acts 2:17). The departure of the Son was the arrival of divine intimacy without borders.
⚖️ The Spirit’s Threefold Conviction
Jesus then reveals the Spirit’s role in the world:
Concerning sin – not primarily moral failings, but the refusal to believe in Jesus. The Spirit opens our eyes to see that the greatest sin is rejecting the One who came to save us.
Concerning righteousness – because Jesus goes to the Father. His ascension proves that He was innocent, that His sacrifice was accepted, and that a new righteousness – not our own – is now available to all who trust Him.
Concerning judgment – because “the prince of this world” (Satan) already stands condemned. The Cross was not a defeat; it was the verdict of hell. The Spirit assures us that evil has no final say.
🌿 From Orphans to Temples
Jesus never left us orphaned. He exchanged a physical presence for a spiritual one – infinitely more powerful. The same Spirit who hovered over the waters of creation now dwells in the water of your baptism. The same Spirit who descended on Jesus at the Jordan now fills you as a living temple.
This is why the apostle Paul can say: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit?” (1 Corinthians 6:19). God is not far away. He is inside you.
🕯️ Living in the Power of the Advocate
Today, the Spirit continues His work:
He convinces you of sin – not to crush you, but to lead you to confession.
He assures you of righteousness – not your own, but Christ’s, given as a gift.
He reminds you that judgment has already passed from you to the enemy. You are free.
✨ Prayer for Today
Come, Holy Spirit! Fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, and we shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the earth. Amen.
