The Holy Gospel according to John 14:1-12

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way.”

Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.”

The Way Home is a Person 👣

In this powerful passage from the Gospel of John, Jesus addresses a fundamental human struggle: uncertainty. The disciples were anxious about the future, much like we often are today.

1. A Remedy for the Troubled Heart

Jesus begins with a command: "Do not let your hearts be troubled." This isn't just a "don't worry" platitude. It is an invitation to anchor our trust in His personhood. When the world feels shaky, our stability doesn't come from knowing exactly where we are going, but from knowing Who is leading us.

2. The Identity of the Way

Thomas is essentially all of us when he asks for a map. He wanted a destination and a set of directions. Jesus’ response shifts the entire perspective of faith:

"I am the Way and the Truth and the Life."

Christianity is unique because our "map" is a relationship. Jesus doesn't just point to the truth; He is the Truth. He doesn't just show us a path; He is the Way. When we feel lost, we don't need more information; we need more of Him.

3. Seeing the Invisible

Philip’s request—"Show us the Father"—is the cry of every human soul wanting to see God. Jesus clarifies that the Father isn't a distant, hidden CEO of the universe. He is visible in the love, the mercy, and the works of Jesus. To know Jesus is to know the heart of the Father.

4. Greater Works

The most shocking part of this text is the promise that we will do "greater works." How is that possible? Because Jesus went to the Father and sent His Spirit. Our worship and our lives are now the "extensions" of His hands in the world today.

Reflection for Today:

  • What is "troubling" your heart right now? Can you breathe in His peace and acknowledge that He has already prepared a place for you?

  • Are you looking for a "how" when Jesus is offering you "Who"? Today, focus less on the steps and more on the Shepherd.

In your worship today, remember: You aren't just following a religion; you are walking with the Way Himself. 🕊️
