📖 Scripture: John 16:20-23a (NIV)
“Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. In that day you will no longer ask me anything.”
🌿 Reflection: Joy That Survives the Grave
Opening question (different angle):
Have you ever noticed how the world’s happiness is like a smartphone battery – it drains fast and needs constant recharging?
(Pause)
Jesus knew his disciples were about to hit rock bottom. They would see him arrested, tortured, crucified. Their world would collapse. Meanwhile, his enemies would pop champagne (figuratively speaking). The scoreboard of evil would seem to read: God 0, Satan 1.
But Jesus drops a bombshell: “Your grief will turn to joy.”
1️⃣ The Two Kinds of Joy
The Greek New Testament uses two different words for joy:
Chará (χαρᾶ) – the deep, eternal joy Jesus gives.
Chara (same spelling, but context matters) – the world’s version, which is really just relief from pain.
The world’s joy depends on circumstances: a promotion, a wedding, a vacation. It’s real, but fragile. One bad diagnosis, one broken relationship, and it evaporates.
Question: When was the last time your happiness disappeared because something went wrong?
Jesus promises a joy that outlasts trouble. It’s not the absence of pain, but the presence of a Person – the Risen Lord himself.
2️⃣ The Birth Pangs of Resurrection
Why does Jesus use childbirth as a metaphor? Because labor is productive pain.
A mother in contractions doesn’t suffer pointlessly. Every wave of agony brings life closer. And when she holds her newborn, the memory of suffering is not erased – it’s transformed into joy. She would do it all over again for that little face.
Think about this:
The cross was the most violent contraction in history – and what was born? The salvation of the world.
Your personal crosses are also birth pangs. Something new wants to emerge: patience, trust, holiness, or simply a deeper dependence on God.
3️⃣ “I Will See You Again” – The Game-Changer
The disciples didn’t just lose a teacher; they lost their best friend. But Jesus says: “I will see you again” – a promise of reunion, not a distant memory.
That reunion happened on Easter morning. And it keeps happening every time we encounter the Risen Christ: in the Eucharist, in Scripture, in the breaking of bread with brothers and sisters.
Impactful thought:
If Jesus rose, then no tomb – not a physical one, not an emotional one – can hold you forever.
4️⃣ “No One Will Take Your Joy” – The Ultimate Security
People can steal your wallet, your reputation, even your freedom. But the joy of knowing the Risen Lord is hostage-proof. Why? Because it’s not stored in a bank or in someone’s opinion. It’s stored in an empty tomb.
St. Paul, writing from a dungeon, said: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). He was chained, but his joy was unchained.
Question for you today:
What’s threatening to steal your joy right now? A relationship? A financial worry? A past failure? Give it to the One who defeated death.
✨ Today’s Takeaway
You may be in a season of weeping – Jesus doesn’t deny that. But he also doesn’t leave you there. The same power that rolled away the stone can roll away the stones blocking your joy.
Practical step:
Write down one thing that makes you sad today. Then write next to it: “This is not the end. He will see me again.”
📿 Prayer
Lord Jesus, when I’m in the night of weeping, remind me that morning is coming. Let your resurrection joy be my secret strength – unshakable, unstealable, eternal. I choose to trust not in happy circumstances, but in a living Savior. Amen.
