Scripture Reference: John 17:1-11a (Tuesday of the 7th Week of Easter)

“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you…” (John 17:1)

There are moments in the Gospel when the veil between heaven and earth becomes almost transparent. Today’s passage is one of them. Jesus is no longer teaching crowds or healing the blind. He is speaking directly to the Father — and He allows us to listen.

This is the High Priestly Prayer. And in just a few verses, the Lord redefines everything we thought we knew about life, glory, and eternity.

The “Hour” That Changes Everything

Jesus begins with a startling declaration: “Father, the hour has come.”

Throughout John’s Gospel, that “hour” had been a ticking mystery — the moment of His passion, death, and resurrection. But notice: He does not ask to be spared. He asks to be glorified. Why? So that He might glorify the Father in return.

In the logic of heaven, glory is not escape from suffering; it is love made visible on the cross. Jesus looks at the agony awaiting Him and calls it glory — because His obedience will reveal the Father’s heart.

For you and me, this is revolutionary. Your hardest Tuesday — the one you are living right now — can also become an “hour” of glory when offered back to the Father.

What Is Eternal Life? (It’s Not What You Think)

Then comes the most beautiful definition in all of Scripture:

“This is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” (John 17:3)

Not endless time. Not harps and clouds. Eternal life is a relationship. It is knowing the Father through the Son, here and now. Heaven begins the moment you truly recognize Jesus — not as a distant judge, but as the One sent for you.

Saint Irenaeus famously wrote: “The glory of God is man fully alive.” To know God is to live. And to live is to begin eternity today.

You Are Kept, Even When the World Keeps Spinning

Jesus goes on: “I gave them your word, and the world hated them… I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.” (John 17:14-15, implied in the full chapter context, but echoing today’s passage where He prays for those given to Him).

Notice: He does not pray to remove us from difficulty. He prays for protection within it. You are not meant to escape the mess of life — you are meant to be a sanctuary of God’s presence inside it.

Your workplace, your family struggles, your hidden tears — none of it is outside the scope of this prayer. Jesus is praying for you at this very moment.

A Short Prayer

Father, the hour has come in my life too — not always the hour I would choose, but the hour You give. Glorify Yourself in my small yes today. Let me know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. Keep me in the world without belonging to the world. And when I feel forgotten, remind me: Your Son is praying for me now. Amen.
