Daily Word: Mark 12:13-17 – Give to God What Is God’s | Tuesday, June 2

A trap, a coin, and a divine answer. Jesus teaches us to render to Caesar what is Caesar’s — and to God everything else. 4-minute reflection.

Scripture Reference: Mark 12:13-17 (Tuesday of the 9th Week in Ordinary Time)

“Jesus said to them, ‘Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.’” (Mark 12:17)

They set the trap with surgical precision. A coalition of strange bedfellows — Pharisees (who opposed Roman rule) and Herodians (who supported it) — join forces. Their flattery is calculated: “Teacher, we know you are truthful, that you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion, and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.”

All true. But their hearts are false.

Then the question: “Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?” If Jesus says “Yes,” the Pharisees will brand Him a collaborator with Rome. If He says “No,” the Herodians will accuse Him of sedition. Either answer leads to ruin.

But Jesus does not play their game. He asks for a denarius — a day’s wage, bearing the image of Tiberius Caesar and the inscription “Son of the Divine Augustus.”

“Whose image and inscription is this?”
“Caesar’s.”
“Then give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

The trap shatters. And the question echoes still.

The Coin and the Soul

The genius of Jesus’ answer is not that it divides life into two neat boxes — one for politics, one for religion. It does something far more radical. It asks: What bears God’s image?

The coin bears Caesar’s image. So give it back to Caesar. But you — you bear the image of God (Genesis 1:26). You were stamped with the Trinity at your baptism. So you belong to God. All of you.

Jesus does not say “give to God a slice of your life — Sunday mornings, some spare change, a few prayers.” He says: recognize that your very identity, your soul, your existence is marked by God’s ownership. Caesar can have his currency. But your heart? That is minted in heaven.

The Trap We Still Face

We may not have Pharisees and Herodians interrogating us. But the trap is still set — daily.

“Should I compromise my faith to get ahead at work?”
“Is it okay to stay silent when my values are mocked?”
“Can I separate my ‘spiritual life’ from my ‘real life’?”

These are modern versions of the same question. The world wants Jesus to pick a side — a political party, a culture war faction, a social media tribe. But Jesus refuses to be reduced. He always points higher: to the reign of God that transcends every earthly empire.

What Belongs to God?

Everything. Absolutely everything.

  • Your time — not just Sundays.

  • Your money — not just the leftover change.

  • Your relationships — not just the convenient ones.

  • Your suffering — not just the joyful moments.

  • Your death — not just your life.

When we “give to God what is God’s,” we are not losing something. We are placing everything into the hands of the One who made it, sustains it, and redeems it. That is not deprivation. That is liberation.

The Practical Question for Your Tuesday

Take a honest look at your wallet, your calendar, your phone screen, your inner thoughts. Ask yourself: “Where have I acted as if this belongs only to Caesar — to the world, to the system, to my own selfish desires?”

Then gently, deliberately, hand it back to God.

Paying taxes is fine. Working for a living is good. But never let Caesar — any earthly authority or idol — claim what belongs only to the King of Kings.

A Short Prayer

Lord Jesus, You saw through every trap. Give me Your wisdom today. Help me to fulfill my duties to the world without forgetting that my true citizenship is in heaven. Take back every part of my life that I have mistakenly given to Caesar alone. I belong to You. Stamp Your image on my heart again. Amen.
