Scripture Reference: Matthew 12:46-50 (Tuesday of the 16th Week in Ordinary Time)
“Stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.’” (Matthew 12:49-50)
The scene is intimate. Jesus is speaking to the crowds when word arrives: “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” The natural expectation would be for Jesus to interrupt His teaching, to honor His earthly family, to step away and attend to them.
Instead, He does something startling. He stretches out His hand toward His disciples and declares: “Here are my mother and my brothers.” Then He adds the condition: “Whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.”
This is not a rejection of His earthly mother. It is an expansion of the meaning of family. Jesus is redefining kinship: the bonds of the Kingdom are deeper than the bonds of blood. To be a member of His family is to do the will of the Father. And in this, Mary is the perfect model.
The Family of Faith
In the ancient world, family was everything. It was the source of identity, security, and loyalty. To be cut off from one's family was to be cut off from life itself. Jesus is not dismissing the importance of family; He is placing it within a larger context.
The true family of Jesus is not defined by biological relationships but by spiritual relationships. Those who hear the Word of God and keep it are His mother, His brother, His sister. They are united to Him by a bond that is stronger than blood — the bond of obedience to the Father's will.
This is not a rejection of Mary. On the contrary, Mary is the first and most perfect member of this new family. She is the one who heard the Word of God and kept it (Luke 11:28). She is the one who said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). She is the one who stood at the foot of the Cross, still faithful. She is the model of what it means to be part of Jesus' true family.
The Call to Obedience
The condition for belonging to Jesus' family is not a set of rituals or a particular lineage. It is doing the will of the Father. This is the heart of discipleship. It is not enough to admire Jesus from a distance. It is not enough to be born into a Catholic family or to attend Mass every Sunday. To be truly related to Christ, we must obey the Father.
This obedience is not a burden; it is a privilege. It is the path to intimacy with Jesus. When we do the will of the Father, we are not just servants; we are family. We are brothers and sisters of Christ, co-heirs with Him of the Kingdom.
Mary: The Perfect Disciple
Mary is the supreme example of this obedience. Her entire life was a continuous "yes" to God's will. She did not always understand; she pondered things in her heart. But she never wavered. She followed her Son from Bethlehem to Egypt, from Nazareth to Calvary. She stood at the Cross when others fled. She was present in the Upper Room at Pentecost, praying with the disciples.
Mary shows us that belonging to Jesus' family is not a passive status but an active relationship. It is a relationship that requires trust, surrender, and perseverance. It is a relationship that is tested in the ordinary moments of life — in the daily choices to say yes to God, even when it is costly.
What This Means for Your Tuesday
Today, Jesus stretches out His hand and invites you into His family.
Are you doing the will of the Father? Not perfectly, but faithfully? Are you seeking to align your life with His purposes, even when it costs you?
Do you treat others as family? The community of believers is your true family. Are you invested in the lives of your brothers and sisters in Christ?
Do you turn to Mary as your Mother? She is the model of discipleship. Ask her to intercede for you, to guide you, to teach you how to say yes to God.
A Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, I want to be a member of Your family. Help me to hear the Word of God and to keep it. Give me the courage to do the will of the Father, even when it is difficult. Like Mary, let me say yes to You — in the big decisions and in the small ones. And let me see every believer as my brother, my sister, my mother. I am Yours. I belong to You. Amen.
