Scripture Reference: Matthew 5:13-16 (Tuesday of the 10th Week in Ordinary Time)

“You are the salt of the earth. […] You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:13-14)

Jesus has just finished proclaiming the Beatitudes — the portrait of a blessed life. Now He looks directly at His disciples and says two astonishing words: “You are.”

Not “you will be someday.” Not “you might be if you try harder.” But right now, in your imperfection, in your ordinary Monday-turned-Tuesday: You are salt. You are light.

This is not a command to go out and become something else. It is a declaration of identity. And it comes with a sobering warning: salt can lose its taste; light can be hidden under a basket.

Salt That Preserves and Creates Thirst

In the ancient world, salt was precious. It preserved meat from decay. It seasoned bland food. It even was used in sacrifices (Leviticus 2:13) as a symbol of the covenant.

To be “salt of the earth” means:

  • Preservation: You are called to slow down the moral decay of the world. Your presence in a family, a workplace, a neighborhood is a silent barrier against corruption.

  • Flavor: You add meaning, hope, and joy to a bland and despairing culture. Your kindness, your patience, your integrity make life taste like what it was meant to be.

  • Thirst: Just as salt makes people thirsty, your life should make others thirst for God. Not because you are pushy, but because the peace you carry is inexplicable.

But Jesus warns: “If salt loses its taste, it is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled.” How does salt lose its taste? By blending in so completely that it becomes indistinguishable from the dirt. When Christians adopt the world’s values, speak the world’s gossip, chase the world’s prizes, they become “tasteless” — and the world rightly ignores them.

Light That Cannot Be Hidden

Then Jesus shifts the metaphor: “You are the light of the world.”

Light exists to be seen. A lamp is not lit and then covered with a basket. It is placed on a stand — high, visible, useful.

What does it mean to be light?

  • Exposure: Light reveals what is hidden — not to shame, but to heal. Your honest witness can expose the lies of the enemy.

  • Guidance: Light shows the way. In a dark world, your choices, your words, your prayers become a path for others to follow.

  • Warmth: Light also gives warmth. Your presence should make others feel safe, loved, and drawn toward the source of all light — Christ Himself.

“A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Christian faith is not meant to be private. It is public, visible, and unashamed — not loud or arrogant, but steady and clear.

The Danger of the Basket

Why would anyone hide light under a basket? Fear. Fear of ridicule. Fear of rejection. Fear of being called “too religious.” The basket is made of worldly respectability, comfort, and the desire to be liked.

Jesus says: Do not put the basket on top of your light. Let your light shine before others — not to show off, but so that they may see your good deeds and give glory to your Father in heaven.

Notice the goal: not your glory, but the Father’s. When you live as salt and light, people do not say, “What a wonderful person.” They say, “What a wonderful God.”

What This Means for Your Tuesday

Today, you will face choices:

  • Will you speak truth when a lie would be easier?

  • Will you show kindness when indifference is the norm?

  • Will you pray before a meal in public, even if it draws a glance?

  • Will you refuse to join the gossip, the slander, the cutting joke?

These small acts are not insignificant. They are salt. They are light. They are the city on the hill.

Do not worry about being “effective.” Your job is not to convert the world by your own power. Your job is to be salt and be light. God will do the rest.

A Short Prayer

Lord Jesus, You call me salt — preserve me from becoming bland. You call me light — help me to shine without fear. Forgive me for the times I have hidden my faith under the basket of comfort, approval, or cowardice. Set me on the lampstand of this Tuesday. Let someone — just one person — see Your goodness through me today, and give glory not to me, but to our Father in heaven. Amen.
